Town Mills

OS ref 501 184
Originally called New Town Mills after Lord Rolle built them here to replace old corn mills at Taddiport, now known as Orford Lodge.  Here the canal leader leat from Rosemoor joined with a side stream flowing down from the lakes at Stevenstone Park, the country seat of the Rolle family.  The junction of these two watercourses provided a substantial holding basin.  At this point Lord Rolle built a splendid road bridge crossing the River Torridge which includes an additional arch to accommodate the canal.
